Brian Chau is a lot of things – mathematician, political theorist, programmer, and podcaster. Brian invited me on to his show to talk about what's gone wrong with mental health. We talk a lot about the causes and manifestations of loneliness and social anxiety, which I attribute to greater choice, opportunity, and technology. Relatedly, we talk about whether being high status/successful online can be enough to compensate for being low status/unsuccessful IRL. We conclude by talking about MAID for those with mental illness, and whether it can be justified. Also, the first 40 minutes or so is very focused on Canadian history and politics, since Brian and I are both from Toronto. -
